Frostbite Sailing

Sundays, first race at 1 pm. November through the end of March.
$275 Club Members ---- $335 Non-Members ---- $475 Club Boat Charter

Norwalk YC's frostbite fleet sails the 9' Dyer Dhow. The first race starts at 1 pm sharp, with the last start no later than 3 pm.  We retire to the Clubhouse around 3:30 to discuss results and Rules while enjoying drinks and snacks.  Social events and clinics add to the fun.Fast Dyer Dhow

We average 16-18 boats each week, and 120 to 150 races a season.  A cold winter day makes for great camaraderie, and there's plenty of support for new and improving sailors.  The course is short (10-15 minutes) so the racing is tight and tactical, with plenty of opportunities to develop one's knowledge of the racing rules and improve their tactical game.  We aim for 8 starts each Sunday.

It's a fun way to get out of the house. You may be thinking that sailing a 9' dinghy in the middle of the winter is miserably cold, but it isn't as cold as you'd think when you're moving about in the boat. We averaged 55 degrees throughout the season a few years ago, and the temperature never got below 36 degrees during the 2016 season.  It's much better than the chairlift at Stratton. Also, while a few sailors wear drysuits, the bulk of the fleet wear rubber boots, foul weather pants, rubber gloves with fleece inside, and regular jackets.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining the frostbite program at Norwalk, please bring them along!  Norwalk Yacht Club extends the invitation to any and all interested sailors, and there's usually a spare boat available to borrow. The Club has several charter boats available for first-year sailors who would like to try before they buy.
