January from the Helm

Happy New Year fellow Members.   Well… , back from the great adventure Down Under! Although we did not experience the fabled “Southerly Buster” we did have plenty of breeze – 35 to 40 knots all day on Day 2. The Darien Sale and Power Squadron has asked me to do a talk on the race at our Club on Sunday, February 11th at 1730.

I want to share particularly with you fellow Members my impression of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney. The CYCA (along with Royal Hobart) is the Organizing Authority of the Race.   As such and along with the quality of its membership, the CYCA is one of the premier organizations in yachting word wide. We spent a week of training based out of the CYCA and it reminded me a lot of Norwalk Yacht Club.    It has a big marina full of boats and a relatively small and modest clubhouse full of Members and others having fun. The CYCA is long on tradition but short on airs – just like our Club. We should be very proud of the facility and culture we have here at Norwalk. So – head to the Club Store and kit up with some NYC burgee logo gear from Team 1 or Lands End. Represent!

As we get in to the New Year you’ll notice that we have posted on the website (and attached here) a revised policy for private functions.   Although our Clubhouse is modest by some standards (not the CYCA’s!) it is a fantastic facility and Members have been making better and better use of it for all manner of events including private functions.   The new policy (ratified by the Board of Governors at its January meeting) is not much changed but we have tweaked it based on experience from last year around the size and impact of some events – particularly during the commissioned season. Within the policy guidelines it has been and will be up to the Flag, along with House Chair Bill Leach, to ensure that each event conforms with perhaps the most important element in the Policy guide: that no party will preclude enjoyment of the Club by Members. The Flag and House Committee will keep this imperative very much in mind; particularly for events on weekends and particularly when we get to the commissioned season. The Club wants and needs Members to enjoy the Club for private functions. We also need to make sure that the facility is available to all. So, if you are considering a party – be sure and get in touch with House Chair Bill Leach early so you can reserve a date and make sure the event is within guidelines.

It is great to be home and I am very much looking forward to the Super Bowl party and chili contest. I’ve heard descriptions of some some new and novel entries. Get yours ready!
